We continue to meet the needs of individuals seeking Short-term Rehabilitation, Alzheimer's, Long-term care and Assisted Living.

Bethany Lutheran Homes marks 40th anniversary

A Bit of History- Did you know that 2015 marked a special year for Bethany Lutheran Home? In the mid-1960's, a local Lutheran Pastor shared a vision with his congregation of a need for better and more available nursing home care for the elderly in the area. The Lutheran congregations involved were Our Savior's, Saint John, Emanuel, St. Paul, Faith, Timothy and Shepherd of the Valley in Council Bluffs; St. Paul's in Neola, Underwood in Underwood, St. John Honey Creek, St. John Mineola, St. Paul Treynor, St. John's Hastings, and St. John and Trinity in Persia. Articles recount the mission of Bethany Lutheran Home's early stages: "As Christians we pledge ourselves to live by HIS WORD. One of the important parts of Christian living is concern for, and caring for the elderly. The premise of Bethany Lutheran Home was built around Matthew 25:40, "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye did it to me also." Bethany Lutheran Home continues to provide a place of comfort and compassion for more than 121 individuals seeking long-term care, short-term rehabilitation or Alzheimer/Special Care. Meeting the needs and enhancing the quality of life, Bethany Lutheran Home provides a well-rounded program to meet the ever-changing needs and desires of our residents. Jesus said in John 14:2, "In My Father's House are many Rooms...I have prepared a place for you." Thanks to the continued support of your congregation, Bethany Lutheran Home is proud to provide a place for hundreds of individuals in the past and look forward to serving many more in the years to come.

Bethany Christmas Store Thank You-

The 6th Annual Bethany Christmas Store was a huge success thanks to many donated items and the support of our congregations and Bethany Auxiliary. The Residents enjoyed many days of shopping for family members and a chance to reminisce about days gone by. The Christmas Store was a meaningful highlight for Residents and Staff and an opportunity to remember the reason for this season. Many individuals love to shop the "After Christmas Sales" and plan for next year. Christmas Store items and gift bags are accepted all year long. If you would like to donate items after Christmas, please contact Kaily Stanley at 712-328-9500, ext. 230 to make arrangements. Thank you for your generosity in making this event a time to remember each year.

Sarah Norton named 2015 LeadingAge Iowa Employee of the Year--Support and Service Staff

"John Smith, Come on Down!! You're the next contestant on the Price WAS Right!!" We work with a generation that remembers Bob Barker and "The Price Is Right", but how many remember the price of items in the 1950's? What about hearing your name being called to guess the price and spin the wheel for a prize. This is only one of the many activities that Sarah has developed for the tenants at Bethany Heights. One of the secrets of aging is to remain active. That can certainly describe Sarah and her activities. Sarah spends many hours researching activities that stimulate the mind, body and spirit. The State Plate game is a popular activity where tenants are divided up into teams and toss a bean bag onto one of many paper plates (state name underneath) to determine what state trivia questions they will answer. Other activities include adaptable crafts for individuals whose fingers aren't quite what they used to be or a patio game of horseshoes or tending to the flower and vegetable garden. Sarah also remembers that four-legged animals have been important family members in the past so she has a Pet Therapy group visiting monthly for some extra loving. Trips to museums, lunches out, concerts in the park, trips to the local AAA baseball game as well as morning exercises keep tenants active physically and mentally. Sarah also adapted the Community Room into a drive-in movie theater with wheels and headlights on the chairs and a concession stand for that much needed popcorn and soda. April is prom season and Bethany Heights hosted their first annual Senior Prom. The prom included a backdrop for photos, refreshments and corsages and boutonniere's for all in attendance. Two highlights of the event included prom king and queen and a couple who danced to a song they had danced to shortly before he shipped out for the war. Sarah's creativity far exceeds what is expected. Recently during National Camping Day, Sarah created a starry night on the ceiling of the community room, a campfire with colored paper flames and light all while tenants enjoyed smores around the campfire. The tenants and staff all love her. She routinely will also hear feedback from family members that their loved one has not enjoyed life like this for quite a while. Sarah's passion for seniors shines through and is evident through the conversations and participation of so many individuals. It is our pleasure to nominate Sarah Norton for the Employee of the Year: Support and Service Staff. Her actions not only lead by example, but she has a knack for bringing out the best in everyone she comes in contact with. Congratulations Sarah!
